New Year, New Attitude

Posted by: Susie Rogers Posted Date: 05/01/2012

It might be deeply ingrained within the British psyche, but the compulsion to moan and complain is ultimately self-defeating - it makes us feel miserable.

Flip it around and the converse is true: offering praise and support creates a positive atmosphere that benefits not only the recipient of our goodwill, but also ourselves. We feel good because we've made someone else happy.

Now I'm not suggesting for one moment that we should all pass our days liberally lavishing praise on the unworthy, otherwise that surly, unhelpful, call-centre worker would score unrealistically high on the post-call feedback score we're all encouraged to engage in. But praise where it's due is a force for good. As the owner of BeautyWorksWest, I've been taken aback by the number of positive comments we've received from customers who have enjoyed using our new products. Not because our products are not worthy of praise, they are, but because many of these comments were quite unsolicited. People were emailing us extolling the virtues of YOUTH, thanking us for courteous customer service and prompt delivery, and detailing how the supplement had made them feel better. Many more conversations took place on the phone, a rare thing these days but so rewarding.

This, of course, is nourishing food for the soul. It makes all the hard work worthwhile and provides the impetus to do more. Like Ready Brek, it leaves a burning ember glowing inside. And who wouldn't like to make someone feel warm inside, or indeed feel it for themselves.

Be happy, avoid the news!

Posted by: Susie Rogers Posted Date: 14/12/2011

Be happy, avoid the news!

I have a useful piece of advice to pass on, which may make the run-up to Christmas, and Christmas itself, altogether more enjoyable.

There’s not really much that any of us can do about the Eurozone, the ECB or reducing the sovereign debts. As a self-confessed news junkie, I’ve found myself feeling a deep sense malaise over the last few weeks. A loyal fan of Newsnight, even Paxo forewarns us that the show will be delivering more depressing news the following night. So I concluded that the best course of action was to wean myself off the news, to simply stop watching. I feel lighter, as if I have unburdened myself of the weight of the unruly world. It’s not forever, I need to keep myself connected of course, but a break is as good as a rest, as they say.

So enjoy your festivities; eat, drink and don’t watch the news. Make sure you take plenty of exercise, not just to work off the calories but also to help with the stress. A good walk in the park is a fabulous tonic, but make sure to turn off that smartphone. It can wait.

Giving - to the Community

Posted by: Susie Rogers Posted Date: 11/11/2011

The magnetic pull towards Christmas is palpable; shop windows along Westbourne Grove are bare, awaiting their glitzy and welcoming festive adornments. But Christmas will not be merry for many young people within a short distance of these fairy lights.

Notting Hill is a tale of two cities, the ever-fashionable W11 and the socially deprived areas further north, within W10.

It is here that the Rugby Portobello Trust makes a real difference to our community, by enriching the lives of young people and providing a positive alternative to a life of social exclusion. Every year, some 800 young people walk through the doors of the RPT centre in Walmer Road, many of them dealing with exceptionally difficult personal circumstances.

They are offered practical support, which includes vocational courses, an array of activities, one-to-one mentoring and housing. This is all delivered by an extraordinary group of committed volunteers.

As a registered youth, education and housing charity, fundraising is key to continuing and developing their work. This year, there is a drinks party & shopping night on Tuesday 22nd November between 6pm – 9pm, and a Christmas Fair on Wednesday 23rd November between 9am – 4pm. The venue is the 20th Century Theatre, 291 Westbourne Grove, W11.

Tickets are priced at £25. We’ll be there manning our stall, and hope you can make it too.

Welcoming the BeautyWorksWest Range

Posted by: Susie Rogers Posted Date: 11/10/2011

This month we raise the curtain on our very own beauty range, which is cause for much celebration and pride. As our clients well know, we are passionate about beauty so the products we use in the spa and feature on our web site are all chosen with great care and love.

Our own range is no different. Some years in development, Dr Sister has brought his considerable knowledge to bear and has created a line of natural, highly effective anti-ageing products which are, quite simply, divine. Beautifully scented, a pleasure to use. We would also like to introduce three candles, coming very soon: Calm, Energy and Spirit. I am nothing short of a candle junkie and took great delight in choosing fragrances which I love to fill my home with. Hand crafted in hand blown glass containers, they are quite unique. I hope you enjoy the range as much as I do.

Free Your Space & Your Mind!

Posted by: Susie Rogers Posted Date: 04/07/2011

The sorry clothes in your wardrobe

which haven’t seen daylight for years, either too big,

too small or too off-trend, as they say.

The shoes that you’ve never worn but worship in their pristine box. Then there are the infamous drawers, that safe haven for all those things you must keep hold of but never use. A jumble of wires, cables, computer parts and broken watches. Not to mention the piles of old papers and magazines which would more suitably sit in your dentist’s waiting room.

We all aspire to the semi-mythical ‘spring clean’, but rarely get around to it. Well, now is the time to declutter. Charity shops are just desperate for those old clothes and remember, those designer must-haves you bought on a whim could raise money for many global hot-spots in need. So liberating your home not only liberates your mind but can help needy others.

I have a great friend who has recently embarked upon an all-encompassing decluttering campaign, clearing 25 years worth of clothes she has been hoarding. They were taking up all the space in her flat, indeed one room was a shrine to all the things she had bought but barely worn. So, after delivering over 70 bags’ worth to charity shops she felt good, very good, not least because we figured out those designer and vintage items probably raised enough money to vaccinate over 1,000 children.

You could also work to my favoured principle. For every new thing I buy, I give away something old. Cluttered space leads to a cluttered mind, as the psychologists say. And that’s a fact.

So free your spirit and if you haven’t worn it, used it, or loved it for a year, give it away!

Hugs..!  Susie

Here’s to female friendships : Good for your health

Here's to female friendships : Good for your health

I received this email through a friend and want to share it with you…

She wrote...

I just finished taking an evening class at Stanford. The last lecture was on the mind-body connection--the relationship between stress and disease. The speaker (head of psychiatry at Stanford) said, among other things, that one of the best things that a man could do for his health is to be married to a woman whereas for a woman, one of the best things she could do for her health was to nurture her relationships with her girlfriends. At first everyone laughed, but he was serious.

Women connect with each other differently and provide support systems that help each other to deal with stress and difficult life experiences. Physically this "quality girlfriend time" helps us to create more serotonin--a neurotransmitter that helps combat depression and can create a general feeling of well being. Women share feelings whereas men often form relationships around activities.

They rarely sit down with a buddy and talk about how they feel about certain things or how their personal lives are going. Jobs? Yes. Sports? Yes. Cars? Yes. Fishing, hunting, golf? Yes. But their feelings?--rarely. Women do it all the time. We share from our souls with our sisters, and evidently that is very good for our health. He said that spending time with a friend is just as important to our general health as jogging or working out at a gym.

There's a tendency to think that when we are "exercising" we are doing something good for our bodies, but when we are hanging out with friends, we are wasting our time and should be more productively engaged--not true. In fact, he said that failure to create and maintain quality personal relationships with other humans is as dangerous to our physical health as smoking! So every time you hang out to schmooze with a gal pal, just pat yourself on the back and congratulate yourself for doing something good for your health!

We are indeed very very lucky.

So let's toast to our friendship with the women in our lives. Evidently it's very good for our health.

Hugs..!  Susie

Everything you need to know about – DIY pedicure!

Posted by: Susie Rogers Posted Date: 12/05/2011

Your local salon is fully booked, the Jimmy Choo open-toe

sandals are a must for that party tonight. Or perhaps

you’ve just looked down and your chipped toenails and

rough calloused feet could feature in an Alien movie.

What to do?

First step – always keep the following tools and products in a beautiful box ready for emergencies. Olive oil, coarse brown sugar, coarse sea salt, moisturizer, professional buffer block, nail clippers or scissors, pedicure sticks (referred to as Orange sticks) and a really good nail/foot file. Also, a top quality nail varnish remover, basecoat, topcoat and a favourite colour nail varnish.

Then pour yourself a glass of wine, put on your favourite sounds and proceed as follows…

1. Remove polish from toenails

2. Fill your bath or a big plastic bowl with warm water

3. In a separate bowl mix a handful of coarse sea salt, a handful of coarse brown sugar and add olive oil. Just enough to make it nice & smooth.

4. With the mixture, scrub those feet well. Leave half aside for a leg scrub afterwards, and soak for around 10 minutes.

5. Use the rest of the mixture and scrub up and down your legs and feet once again.

6. Rinse your feet and legs with cool water and towel dry.

7. Use the foot file and rub those heels and balls of the feet, but not too hard. If you have corns or callouses always go to a professional.

8. Trim your toenails with nail scissors or clippers. If they are long, cut them straight across to help prevent ingrowth.

9. Gently push back your cuticles with the orange sticks, (leave cutting to the professionals).

10. Use the buffer on the nails to smooth and shine.

11. Give your feet and legs a gorgeous massage with the moisturizer, I often use a thick hand cream. This will get the circulation going.

12. Wipe off any excess cream on the nail bed and then apply your basecoat allowing it to dry thoroughly.

13. Apply the colour slowly and evenly, allow to dry, then apply a second coat.

14. When dry, apply the topcoat, which prevents chipping.

15. Tidy any stray colour by taking your orange stick, twirling some cotton wool around it, dipping it in varnish remover and dabbing gently.

16. Allow to dry for an hour, particularly important with strong colours. Just while away the time dancing barefoot around the room.

17. Use a cuticle oil weekly to keep those feet moisturized.

Be Passionate, it keeps you young! Part 2

Posted by: Susie Rogers Posted Date: 12/04/2011

Are you passionate? Well it most certainly helps to be if

you want to maintain your youth and vitality. According to

doctors Mehmet Oz and Michael Roizen, authors of the

book, Young: The Owner’s Manual for Extending Your

Warranty, having a passion in life is a major determinant

in anti-ageing and can erase as much as 13 years off

your biological age. Yes, that’s right – 13 years, and not an

expensive cream or scalpel in sight!

You can be passionate about almost anything, perhaps a sport or hobby which consumes you and sets your pulse racing. Indulging yourself in pleasurable activities also does the trick, including sport and of course sex. What is this magic? Well, it’s all about hormones. Sport, sex, exercise, pursuit of your passion – all of these things stimulate the release of hormones including oxytocin, serotonin, dopamine and endorphins. These hormones help combat the negative effects of stress hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol, which are major ageing culprits.

So fire yourself up, indulge in pleasure, indulge in passion, it’s good for your health and keeps you young.

Think Yourself Young - Part 1

Posted by: Susie Rogers Posted Date: 16/03/2011

It’s too easy to believe that our chronological age defines

what we are, who we are and how we should behave.

Not only is it too easy, it’s also self-defeating in that we

circumscribe and define our expectations by thinking

ourselves old.

The way we think influences the way we feel, and thinking ourselves old saps our energy and vitality and makes us feel old. So, what to do? In short, we need to think young, we need to focus on the positives to stay as young, vital and energetic as we can.

We need to trade in old thinking for new. No more talk of ‘senior moments’ or ‘growing old gracefully’. Even the way we express our behaviours reinforces our negative thinking. The key to opening up our lives centres on the way we think and our lifestyle choices.

Try to avoid spending too much time with people who simply abandon themselves to old age, it can be ageing! We tend to learn and absorb ideas about ageing from friends and family, and if they have ‘old’ thinking, it can have an unhealthy impact. Far better for us to choose friends who think positively, who are productive, who are future orientated, who have goals. These are positive role models because these are people who can help us change our lives, help improve it. And remember, one of the symptomatic traps of old age is a belief that change is scary, coupled with a reluctance to accept new ideas.

The opposite is of course true. Change requires energy, momentum and a vision of the future. It keeps us healthy, inspired and youthful. So make sure you choose your friends carefully and see the world through adventurous, innocent eyes.
