Be happy, avoid the news!

Posted by: Susie Rogers Posted Date: 14/12/2011

Be happy, avoid the news!

I have a useful piece of advice to pass on, which may make the run-up to Christmas, and Christmas itself, altogether more enjoyable.

There’s not really much that any of us can do about the Eurozone, the ECB or reducing the sovereign debts. As a self-confessed news junkie, I’ve found myself feeling a deep sense malaise over the last few weeks. A loyal fan of Newsnight, even Paxo forewarns us that the show will be delivering more depressing news the following night. So I concluded that the best course of action was to wean myself off the news, to simply stop watching. I feel lighter, as if I have unburdened myself of the weight of the unruly world. It’s not forever, I need to keep myself connected of course, but a break is as good as a rest, as they say.

So enjoy your festivities; eat, drink and don’t watch the news. Make sure you take plenty of exercise, not just to work off the calories but also to help with the stress. A good walk in the park is a fabulous tonic, but make sure to turn off that smartphone. It can wait.

Be Passionate, it keeps you young! Part 2

Posted by: Susie Rogers Posted Date: 12/04/2011

Are you passionate? Well it most certainly helps to be if

you want to maintain your youth and vitality. According to

doctors Mehmet Oz and Michael Roizen, authors of the

book, Young: The Owner’s Manual for Extending Your

Warranty, having a passion in life is a major determinant

in anti-ageing and can erase as much as 13 years off

your biological age. Yes, that’s right – 13 years, and not an

expensive cream or scalpel in sight!

You can be passionate about almost anything, perhaps a sport or hobby which consumes you and sets your pulse racing. Indulging yourself in pleasurable activities also does the trick, including sport and of course sex. What is this magic? Well, it’s all about hormones. Sport, sex, exercise, pursuit of your passion – all of these things stimulate the release of hormones including oxytocin, serotonin, dopamine and endorphins. These hormones help combat the negative effects of stress hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol, which are major ageing culprits.

So fire yourself up, indulge in pleasure, indulge in passion, it’s good for your health and keeps you young.

Think Yourself Young - Part 1

Posted by: Susie Rogers Posted Date: 16/03/2011

It’s too easy to believe that our chronological age defines

what we are, who we are and how we should behave.

Not only is it too easy, it’s also self-defeating in that we

circumscribe and define our expectations by thinking

ourselves old.

The way we think influences the way we feel, and thinking ourselves old saps our energy and vitality and makes us feel old. So, what to do? In short, we need to think young, we need to focus on the positives to stay as young, vital and energetic as we can.

We need to trade in old thinking for new. No more talk of ‘senior moments’ or ‘growing old gracefully’. Even the way we express our behaviours reinforces our negative thinking. The key to opening up our lives centres on the way we think and our lifestyle choices.

Try to avoid spending too much time with people who simply abandon themselves to old age, it can be ageing! We tend to learn and absorb ideas about ageing from friends and family, and if they have ‘old’ thinking, it can have an unhealthy impact. Far better for us to choose friends who think positively, who are productive, who are future orientated, who have goals. These are positive role models because these are people who can help us change our lives, help improve it. And remember, one of the symptomatic traps of old age is a belief that change is scary, coupled with a reluctance to accept new ideas.

The opposite is of course true. Change requires energy, momentum and a vision of the future. It keeps us healthy, inspired and youthful. So make sure you choose your friends carefully and see the world through adventurous, innocent eyes.

Scrub your way to a heavenly body

Posted by: Susie Rogers Posted Date: 01/11/2010

Hi Ladies,

Exfoliation is an essential part of my beauty regime and the

benefits are enormous.

Rain or shine, it’s something I do once or twice a week, not

simply when the fake tan beckons.

Why? You have to bid goodbye to those dead cells on the outer surface of the skin to stimulate the growth of new ones. And I ask you, who wants to look and feel like a reptile? A good scrub makes my skin smoother, softer and brighter; it also unclogs pores and boosts circulation which is good for minimising cellulite. Moisturisers are more easily absorbed by new skin cells, so its good news all round.

I start by brushing my skin dry before showering using a body exfoliating brush and sometimes a loofah. Don’t forget – start with soles of the feet and work up. Then I immerse myself in the bath or shower and apply the exfoliant cleanser. My favourite is the Omorovicza Gold Sugar Scrub, which smells and feels gorgeous. Gold is a magical ingredient with healing properties and the sugar cane encourages new cell growth.

Then, ladies, scrub, scrub scrub in circular motions moving up your body. Pay particular attention to those rough areas including the heels and the elbows. A regular pedicure can transform your feet from goblin to princess in no time, otherwise use a pumice stone. Lavish your elbows in a thick body cream because crepe looks better as clothing! Remember to scrub those areas fondly known as bingo-wings to help stimulate and tighten the skin.

I use a washcloth for more sensitive areas and never apply body products on my face. I adore the Själ Pearl Enzyme Exfoliating Mask, which uses pearl extracts to improve skin tone, brighten the complexion and to gently exfoliate and polish the skin.

Once the scrubbing is done, I finish off with a lukewarm to cold’ish shower, not always easy in the depths of December, but good for the skin and the soul! Now you can love yourself in your birthday suit all year round.

Introducing Power Plates

Introducing Power Plates

Divine intervention in the world of physical fitness is most

definitely the Power Plate, and I am a passionate

advocate. Combine Power Plate with a balanced, healthy

diet and you will look and feel great. It’s a promise.

Using the principles of Acceleration Training, it stimulates the body’s natural response to vibration. Vibrations transmit waves of energy throughout the body, activating muscle contractions multiple times per second. In short, by using your core to balance, and optimising muscle contractions in a concentrated period of time, you can achieve an awful lot in a session as short as 15 minutes. Then do three sessions a week and that’s it, job pretty much done!

What’s more, studies have shown that it even stimulates your Human Growth Hormone, (that’s the one that keeps you young), and increases your serotonin levels, (that’s the one that keeps you happy).

Enough of the science, ladies, let’s cut to the chase. It helps in the battle to banish cellulite and tones your muscles like nothing I have ever witnessed. Think tight, perky bottom and you’re there. It’s quick and fun and once you get over the weird feeling of being shaken like a cocktail, you’ll find it oh so hard to give up!

I use it a lot for stretching and it’s increased my flexibility enormously, and the massage setting is great for exorcising stress and stimulating circulation. Warning….do not approach with a hangover! It really isn’t a good feeling.

If you are prone to headaches check with your doctor first, which of course you should do before starting anything new.

So go find a Power Plate studio nearby, or for those with more serious intent, buy one! But as they vibrate they may shake the foundations of your house, so make sure it is situated in the basement.

Stand Tall and Proud

Stand Tall and Proud

No matter if you are 6'5" or 5'l", having a good posture changes the way you walk, look and appear to other people.

Perhaps more importantly, it changes the way you feel about yourself, and is proven to contribute to overall confidence.

As we age, sadly gravity exercises its pull and we may become stooped and lose height. This may be due to a lifetime of bad habits and general postural laziness, or as a result of a sedentary lifestyle hunched over a computer. Often, it is simply the natural process of ageing. The good news is that with the right mental attitude and awareness, it is never too late to stand tall. Not only will it take years off your perceived age, it will also increase your energy levels as it improves the functions of your internal organs. This is especially true of the lungs, which in turn increase your oxygen intake.

Those famed 50's models, who walked around with books on their heads, certainly had the right idea. So…

Stand tall, chin up, (remember that book poised on your head), and pull those 'lats', the major back muscles, down towards your bottom. Tighten those abs and squeeze and pull up the pelvic floor – you should feel like you're wearing a tight corset. Push your shoulders back and smile: instant makeover

Whether walking, standing or sitting, this will take years off you, conveying an air of confidence even if you are having a particularly bad hair day!

Hugs..!  Susie
